How To Safetly Administer Eye Medications

Horses suffering from eye ulcers, uveitis, glaucoma or other ophthalmic ailments often require medications be applied directly to the eye. Here are some tips on how to administer eye medication safely.

1. Have an extra person with you to help
Hold the horse.
2. Use treats to distract and reward the horse.
3. Use your thumb or forefinger to move the upper eyelid out of the way. Then use your another finger to roll the lower eyelid down to create a well.
4. Apply medication to the pink inside edge of the lower eyelid and allow the horse to blink the eye closed.
